Essays - TED - "The talk of a lifetime in 18 minutes or less"

Before there were blogs, there were "essays". An essay is a short article, that presents a specific point of view, a personal story, a scholarly argument, or other short treatment of any topic. Essays often attempt to convince the reader of something. The other day I stumbled upon TED, which is basically a brainiac conference, where people present interesting ideas for your consideration. It's a bit out of my price range (TED 2008 is already sold out, Feb 27-Mar 1 in Monterey, at a minimum cost of $6000 U.S. You can still register for the TED@Aspen simulcast for a cool 3K (!) ) The official description from their website is:

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

The annual conference now brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).

This site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public, for free. Almost 150 talks from our archive are now available, with more added each week. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.

The videos are available at Ted.com, and also here
